Philips 40PFL5605 television makes for a fantastic entry level TV. It's key features include full high definition with a 1920 by 1080 panel, LED backlighting, and a 2.1 sound system.

Though the television does not offer any access to the Internet, the kudos rest solely with the above standard high quality video picture. Made of plain black no-thrills plastic, the display is designed for no-hassle wall-mounting.

The Philips PFL5606's rear end placed LED backlighting causes the set to be a bit thicker than the average television sets on the market today.

However, LED back lighting on thinner television models is done at the edge of the screen, which causes a certain amount of clouding of the picture. The Philips 40PFL5605H does not have any picture blurring issues. As said before, although the Philips 40PFL5605 is not as sleekly designed as modern television sets, the simple casing allows for very few headaches when attempting a wall-mount.

The TV's display casing has zero extras--no flashy lights, dials, or logos, just a simple black with rounded corners. It is reminiscent of a poster frame with the Philips logo branding at the bottom, which is hardly noticeable to the superior quality video and sound one receives from the Philips 40PFL5605/12.

Pixel Plus HD is Philips' new visual technology.

Pixel Plus is included in the Philips 40PFL5605H/12 build, and creates a sharper, more natural looking picture with an unsurpassed vividness not found in other similar television models. Pixel Plus technology also smoothes the transitions in the video.

The 2.1 speaker system does a good job. Philips has included in the 40PFL5605 what is known as Clear Sound, an intriguing piece of technology that automatically detects vocals and "clears" any inherent noise. Clear Sound technology lets the viewer experience sound as if someone were right next to him or her, as opposed to across a table inside a noisy cafe.

The 40PFL5605 includes access to Freeview HD, offers two HDMI inputs, one SCART socket, an audio in, and a headphone jack connector, more than making up for the lack of Internet accessibility.

The designers of the set seemed to be thinking primarily of easy wall-mounting capabilities, because all these connections are at the bottom of the set.

A third HDMI port is located on the side of the 40PFL5605 along with a USB connection. The added USB connection allows the television to be hooked up to a number of different devices, such as a still camera or movie camera and a flash drive, letting the viewer to listen to music or browse through a slideshow of still photos, or even watch video. The 40PFL5605's menu system can easily access a flash drive.

The Phillips 40PFL5605 television set is a no frills buy for those interested in solely watching TV without all the extra bells and whistles, such as Internet access. The TV has an incredible video quality level though, and game players will be happy with this model. The 40PFL5605 affordability fits well into the scheme of a second or third television. For those uncomfortable with technology, the set is easy to use and makes for a simple wall-mount.
